Die Klarinette ist ein zylindrisch gebohrtes Holzblasinstrument. Das am Mundstück befestigte einfache Blatt bringt die Luft zum schwingen.

Gut zwanzig Löcher können direkt mit den Fingern oder mit der Hilfe von gepolsterten Klappen geschlossen werden.

Die meisten Klarinetten werden aus schwarzem Grenadillholz gefertigt. Die Mechanik ist versilbert oder verchromt.

Die am meisten verwendete Klarinette ist in B gestimmt und hat einen Tonumfang von fast vier Oktaven (E bis c').

Da die zylindrische Luftsäule der Klarinette ein offenes Ende hat, tönt ein sog. überblasener Ton zwölf Tonstufen (Doudezime) höher.
